Our playing hall at the GRCC!

Who are we?

The Grand Rapids Chess Center is a premiere chess club and educational center. In 2023, the United States Chess Federation awarded us the prestigious national award for Chess Club of the Year. Our mission is to grow chess in our community by offering a space welcoming to all people, chess at all levels, and opportunities for growth and friendship.

Where do we meet?

We meet at 1157 Northlawn St NE, Grand Rapids, MI–at Northlawn United Methodist Church. Our events meet here unless otherwise noted.

When do we meet?

We meet Tuesday nights from 6:30-9:00. We are off the 4th Tuesday of each month.

What does it cost?

Guests are welcome to visit before either paying a guest fee ($5) or signing up for our yearly membership for just $40 a year. There is a $2 door fee for each person in the building for chess regardless of membership status. This pays for the rental of the space.

Our membership gives you access to our weekly meetings all year as well as access to our rated events if you have a USCF membership as well! More information can be found here.

What do we offer?

  • Open and casual play in a relaxing atmosphere (with coffee!)
  • We are a USCF Affiliate offering USCF-Rated chess weekly for our members
  • GRCC Kidz program where students get light coaching and participate in fun competition! More info here
  • Online classes and in-person coaching opportunities
  • Weekend Tournaments 6-8 times a year, drawing players from the region and beyond to compete in Grand Rapids
